Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket Reactor (UASBR) is an anaerobic biological wastewater treatment technology specifically designed for high-strength organic effluents with elevated COD and BOD concentrations.
In this process, wastewater flows upward through a dense and active anaerobic sludge blanket, where organic matter is biologically converted into biogas consisting mainly of methane and carbon dioxide.
UASBR systems are highly effective for reducing high organic loads with very low energy consumption, as no aeration is required. Compared to aerobic systems, UASBR generates significantly lower sludge volume and offers excellent operational economy for suitable wastewater streams.
Process Working Principle
Influent wastewater is evenly distributed at the bottom of the reactor and flows upward through the anaerobic sludge blanket.
Anaerobic microorganisms degrade complex organic compounds into simpler compounds and biogas.
A well-designed gas–solid–liquid separation system retains biomass within the reactor while allowing treated effluent and biogas to exit separately.
How S N Group of Environment Delivers UASBR Systems
At S N Group of Environment, UASBR systems are designed with precise hydraulic, biological and safety considerations rather than standard reactor sizing methods.
Our engineering approach focuses on stable anaerobic performance, odour control and seamless integration with downstream treatment systems.
Engineering Strengths of Our UASBR Design
Reactor sizing based on organic loading rate (OLR) and actual influent COD characteristics
Accurate hydraulic design to maintain uniform upward flow velocity and sludge blanket stability
Inlet distribution system design for even flow distribution and biomass protection
Gas–solid–liquid separator (GSS) design for efficient biogas capture and solids retention
Provision for biogas collection, safety and odour control
Integration with aerobic or tertiary post-treatment systems to meet final discharge or reuse standards
Performance & Compliance Focus
Our UASBR systems are engineered to deliver stable anaerobic digestion with high COD removal efficiency and controlled odour generation.
Each system is designed to support CPCB / SPCB compliance when combined with appropriate post-treatment processes.
