Activated Sludge Process (ASP)

Technology Overview

Activated Sludge Process (ASP)

Wastewater Treatment

Activated Sludge Process (ASP) is a proven and widely adopted aerobic biological wastewater treatment technology used for effective removal of organic pollutants from wastewater.
In this process, wastewater is mixed with biologically active sludge in an aeration tank, where microorganisms metabolize organic matter in the presence of oxygen.

The treated mixed liquor then flows to a secondary clarifier, where biomass settles under gravity and clarified treated water is separated. A controlled portion of settled sludge is recycled back to the aeration tank to maintain the required microbial concentration, while excess sludge is withdrawn for further thickening and dewatering.

ASP is suitable for applications requiring reliable BOD and COD removal, provided that hydraulic loading, organic load variation and operational parameters are properly controlled through sound engineering design.

Process Working Principle
Wastewater enters the aeration tank where oxygen is supplied through diffused or mechanical aeration systems.
Microorganisms utilize organic pollutants as a food source, converting them into biomass, carbon dioxide and water.
Proper sludge recycling maintains process stability and consistent treatment efficiency.
