Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR)

Technology Overview

Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR)

Wastewater Treatment

Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) is an advanced biofilm-based biological treatment process that uses specially engineered plastic carrier media to support microbial growth. These carriers provide a large protected surface area for biomass attachment while remaining in continuous motion within the reactor, ensuring efficient contact between wastewater, microorganisms and oxygen.

MBBR technology allows higher organic loading rates, improved shock load resistance and compact reactor design compared to conventional activated sludge processes. Due to its inherent process stability, MBBR performs efficiently under fluctuating flow, load and influent quality conditions, making it suitable for both new installations and upgradation of existing treatment systems.

Process Working Principle
In an MBBR system, biofilm grows on the surface of floating carrier media. The continuous movement of media, maintained by aeration or mechanical mixing, ensures uniform treatment and prevents clogging.
Organic matter is degraded by attached biomass, while excess biomass naturally sloughs off and is separated in downstream clarification units.

How S N Group of Environment Delivers MBBR Systems
At S N Group of Environment, MBBR systems are engineered using a process-first approach rather than generic media filling concepts.
Our designs are based on actual wastewater characteristics, loading patterns and treated water quality objectives.
